What is Hyperlipidemia?

hiperlipidemi-nedir

Hyperlipidemia, commonly known as “cholesterol,” refers to elevated levels of cholesterol in the blood. According to the data from the Obesity Study Group of the Turkish Endocrinology and Metabolism Association, lipid metabolism disorders are observed in about 80% of the population in Turkey. Therefore, it is recommended to screen blood lipids regularly starting from age 21 every 5 years, every 2 years from age 40, and annually for individuals with existing diseases or those over 65.

Causes of Hyperlipidemia

The primary cause of this condition is undoubtedly excessive energy intake. The average daily energy requirement for a person is 30 kcal per kilogram of body weight. For example, a 70 kg adult needs 30×70=2100 kcal per day. Any excess calorie intake is first converted into glycogen and then into fat in the liver, where it is stored. These excess fats in our body invite new diseases.

Hyperlipidemia Doesn't Have to Be Your Fate

Excess fats in our body accumulate in the arteries, leading to heart attacks, and in the liver, causing insulin resistance and diabetes. If this fat accumulation is not prevented, it can lead to fatty liver disease, or cirrhosis, in the advanced stages. To prevent this disease from taking over your life, you should first adopt a more active lifestyle and regulate your daily calorie intake. However, for individuals with high blood lipids despite these precautions or those with familial hyperlipidemia, medical treatment with cholesterol medications is used. Individuals who start medical treatment must regularly perform liver function tests and monitor muscle enzyme levels as planned with their doctor.

Wishing you all healthy days.
